Mine Tunnel Support Mesh | Chain Link / Welded Mesh

Mine tunnel support mesh is a vital surface reinforcement system for underground safety. Typically used with rock bolts, it prevents rockfalls and stabilizes tunnel roofs and walls. Available in welded, chain-link, or high-tensile steel designs, it distributes loads and contains loose fragments. For durable solutions, explore products from Geobrugg or Strata Worldwide.

Description

Our Mine Tunnel Support Mesh is engineered welded mesh designed for underground mining and tunneling applications. It provides high-strength reinforcement and structural stabilization, ensuring safe and durable ground support in challenging subterranean conditions.

BRC Mesh Meets Global Standards

BRC MESH uses high‑yield‑strength drawn deformed wires, complies with BS4482:2005, ASTM A1064, or DIN488, and meets BS4483:2005 or ASTM A1064 M standards—with a minimum yield strength of 485–515 N/mm². We supply BRC Mesh in standard sizes and can also produce custom sizes per client request. Our production includes wire diameters from 5 to 12 mm, various sheet sizes, and multiple openings. The table below details wire sizes, weights, and steel area per metre width for standard and custom BRC sheets.

For Mine Tunnel Support and other structural applications—such as bridges, foundations, columns, beams, and retaining walls—ABX Metal designs engineered welded wire mesh tailored to these needs. We manufacture mesh with wires up to 12 mm in diameter, in sheets up to 3.30 m wide and 10.00 m long. Additionally, we provide wire‑mesh bending services to meet specific project requirements.

Core Types of Mine Tunnel Support Mesh

  • Welded Wire Mesh: The most common form, constructed from low-carbon or stainless steel wires welded into a rigid grid. Its high strength and excellent compatibility with shotcrete applications make it the preferred choice for structural stabilization in challenging subterranean conditions.
  • Chain-Link Mesh (Woven): A flexible, diamond-patterned mesh that is easy to handle and transport. Its interlocking design allows it to remain effective even if individual wires break.
  • High-Tensile Steel Wire Mesh (Rhomboid): Engineered for extreme conditions, using wires with tensile strengths up to 1770 N/mm². It is highly dynamic and can absorb significant impact energy from rockbursts or shifting ground.
  • Synthetic/Plastic Mesh: A lightweight, corrosion-proof alternative made of high-strength polyester or PVC. It is safer to handle (no sharp edges) and is often used in permanent roadway support or areas with acidic ground conditions.

As Mine Tunnel Support Mesh: Chain Link Mash VS Welded Wire Mesh

For mine and tunnel support, chain link mesh offers greater flexibility and deformation capacity to conform to uneven surfaces, while welded wire mesh provides higher rigidity, superior strength, and is easier to install on flat, uniform surfaces.

Comparison Table

Feature Chain Link MeshWelded Wire Mesh
StructureWoven, interlocking diamond pattern without welds.Wires welded at each orthogonal intersection.
Flexibility/AdaptabilityHighly flexible; easily adapts to uneven or irregular ground and curves.Rigid; less suitable for uneven terrain, requires a relatively flat surface for optimal installation.
StrengthDurable, but can deform or stretch under pressure. High-tensile versions offer significant load capacity.Stronger and more rigid; provides greater strength and stability with less deformation under impact.
Unraveling ResistanceTendency to unravel if a single wire strand is broken, though modern designs minimize this issue.Welded joints prevent unraveling; damage is localized to the broken wire.
InstallationSupplied in rolls, making transport and handling over large areas easier. Can be labor-intensive to tension manually but can be mechanized.Supplied in stiff panels, which are easier to manipulate and install on flat surfaces, often allowing for faster installation in suitable conditions.
CostGenerally more cost-effective, especially for covering large areas.Higher initial cost due to manufacturing process, but offers better long-term value due to durability.
MaintenanceMay require occasional tightening due to its flexibility.Low maintenance due to its rigid and durable structure.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose Chain Link Mesh if: the mine tunnel or surface is highly irregular or sloped, as its flexibility allows it to conform to the ground better.
  • Choose Welded Wire Mesh if: the tunnel surface is relatively flat and uniform, and you need maximum rigidity and high resistance to impact and cutting.
Both types find wide application in mine engineering and can undergo galvanization or coating to actively resist corrosion in harsh underground environments. The choice depends largely on the specific ground conditions and installation logistics of the mining operation.
